Description

1)Re: Topic 4 DQ 1

Professional organization in any field has the responsibility to serve the public and its members (Gluyas & Harris, 2016). In my state New Jersey, nursing standards are developed after five years. However, the process is very tiresome when dealing with ANA independently thus the board revise the standards on our behalf. Specialty organizations like our states board must develop or revise standards more often to align with universal standards. American Nurse Association (ANA), for a long time is known for developing nursing scopes and standards. Moreover, both ANA and specialty organizations develop professional standards. NRS 430V Outline The Process For Developing Nursing Standards

Scopes servers as universal guidelines for all in the nursing profession specialty while standards of practice are guidelines to all registered nurses, irrespective of the role-played, population or specialty (Masters, 2018). However, nursing standards are subject to changes depending on the current clinical condition and situation. NRS 430V Outline The Process For Developing Nursing Standards

The process of developing nursing standards involves ‘W’ question type to help gather more information as possible (Masters, 2018). Professional standards in nursing show competency in health care in the entire nursing process. Moreover, it purpose to direct, maintain safe and clinically competent nursing practice. The standards are important since they guide our clinical practice. NRS 430V Outline The Process For Developing Nursing Standards

2)Together, the scope and standards of practice regulate and hold accountability for nursing practice. Scope is the extent or boundaries of practice which a nurse is allowed to do, and standards of practice define the safety and quality of nurse practice, ensuring that all nurses practice consistently at a minimum proficiency and competency (Green, 2018). NRS 430V Outline The Process For Developing Nursing Standards

Every state has a process for developing the standards of practice for their nurses which involves national and local organizations, facility policies, and current evidence-based practice. It is the state’s Nurse Practice Act that makes the statutes addressing scope and standard of practice, “the statutes commonly require standards for nursing educational programs, types of and requirements for nursing licenses, and grounds for disciplinary actions” (Green. 2018). In California, standardized procedures are described as “the means designated to authorize performance of a medical function by a registered nurse is a standardized procedure developed through collaboration among registered nurses, physicians and administrators in the organized health care system in which it is to be used” (DCA, 2011).

Standardized procedures are developed according the guidelines of the Board of Registered Nursing and the Medical Board of California: standardized procedures must include the written method used in developing and approving them, and each standardized procedure must be in writing, specify the functions of the nurse under specific circumstances, specify requirements to be followed, specify experience, training, and education needed, establish a method for evaluation, maintain written records of those authorized to perform certain functions, specify scope of supervision required, state limitations on settings, specify patient record-keeping requirements, and provide a method for review of procedures (DCA, 2011).

The state also follows an outline to determine if a standardized procedure is required or not. The entities involved in developing standardized procedures in California are organized health care systems such as health facilities licensed by Department of Public Health or clinics, physician offices, home health agencies, etc, and by collaboration of registered nurses and physicians (DCA, 2011). The standards of practice influence each area of specialty in nursing because different competencies are required for safe and quality practice. 3)In Florida, the board of nursing is the one who comes up with the regulations for nurses. Each states nursing practice act is done by legislature but the nursing pratice act is unable to act alone therfore the board of nursing is there to clarify nursing standards. “A state’s Board of Nursing is the authoritative body responsible for ensuring that nurses who practice in that state are competent, safe, skilled and knowledgeable about the standards set forth in that state’s scope of practice for nurses.” (Bushy, 2020) The BON makes standards of practice for LNP’s all the way up to APRN’s. NRS 430V Outline The Process For Developing Nursing Standards

The nursing practice act in florida gives the BON the power to create legislature and minimum acceptable standards of practice. The point of the legislature is to keep inadequate and unsafe nurses from practicing from in the state of Florida. This affects my own nursing practice by making sure I am being a safe and using at least the minimal acceptable practice with my patients. The ANA also creates nursing standards of practice for the whole US. It is meant to make sure that nationally, nurses are remaining ethical, safe, and maintaing confidentiality. Some standards of practice in the state of Florida are adopted from the ANA. As a pediatric nurse, I have mostly the same standards of practice but some are slightly different because I deal with mostly a younger population.
