Week 11 Update!

Can you believe this……our last week together!!! I have to say it has been wonderful getting to know all of you. I hope that you enjoyed the new Shadow Health tool to augment your learning of health assessment skills, however, it is imperative that you continue to study these skills in real life!!!

We have two items due this final week:

First: This week you have your final exam. Be mindful of the time allotment so that you finish in time. Week 11: The Ethics Behind Assessment

Second: We will be discussing ethical issues in your final assignment. Your paper is NOT in SOAP format. You will be discussing the issue and how you would address the issue as an advance practice nurse. Choose on of the scenarios below and provide detail on what information you would still need to know, and rationale on how you would handle the situation.

Scenario #1: The parents of a 5-year-old boy have accompanied their son for his required physical examination before starting kindergarten. His parents are opposed to him receiving any vaccines. Week 11: The Ethics Behind Assessment

Scenario #2: A 49-year-old woman with advanced stage cancer has been admitted to the emergency room with cardiac arrest. Her husband and one of her children accompanied the ambulance.

Some food for thought, as I have shared this with other students in the past ….

I encourage all of you to continue to refine your otoscope, opthalmoscope, neuro assessment, and DTR assessments. These are the toughest skills to master, so keep practicing and reviewing the information that was provided to you in this course.

When interacting with your patients…..let them know what you are seeing. Reassure them that the finding is normal. Insert patient education when appropriate….ie: sunscreen use when looking at the skin. Week 11: The Ethics Behind Assessment

If you don\’t know an answer to a patient\’s question, or are unsure of something. Never say \”I don\’t know\” or give a flippant answer. Tell them \”I don\’t have that answer but I will get it for you\”.

Dress for success…..where a lab jacket. The confidence that your patient has with you

increases tremendously just by this show of professionalism.

Consider the following scenarios:

You are a nurse at a large county hospital. One of your patients is leaning toward selecting a certain radical treatment for cancer, to which the family is in opposition. The family is concerned about making the correct decision and asks for your advice.
The state of Oregon has passed a “Death with Dignity” act that allows for euthanasia in certain situations. One of your patients suffering from terminal cancer is thinking of moving there to take advantage of this law and asks your opinion.
Throughout this course, you have explored a wide range of health assessments and abnormal examination findings. Although you have predominantly focused on the procedural aspects of health assessment, this week, you will focus on ethical considerations that should be taken into account when advising patients or their families.

This week, you will consider how evidence-based practice guidelines and ethical considerations factor into health assessments. You will also evaluate health assessment concepts related to sports physicals and well-child and well-woman examinations. Week 11: The Ethics Behind Assessment
