I need to respond to a colleague by predicting whether my colleagues’ social issue will remain controversial or become irrelevant to similar popular culture elements in the future. For example, will race be expressed the same way in music in the future? Or, will social class be expressed differently on episodic story telling like television shows in the future?

colleague’s answer: The two popular culture artifacts I am comparing are movies and social media and aspect of advertisement. The movie industry in so many is still not a good representation of the various race, while some progress have been achieved there remains a huge gap especially when it comes to portrayal especially of people of color the stereotype is violence or an absentee father, consequently it affects how the world view people of color, because movies/media shapes how people view issues, people or culture, if we compare the negative effect of movies in racial matters with the positive effect of social media on the same the contrast is huge, because social media helped people and nations rethink and reshape their perception of the black community, case in point how social media became the platform that The Black Lives Matter movement gained prominence world wide. It amplified the injustice the average black person experience through systemic racism. (Aleem Maqbool BBC) (2020) wrote “I feel like Black Live Matter has become a trend.”

The representation of race in movies will witness a significant change given the new rule that the Oscars released September this year “Today, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Aleem Maqbool BB announced new representation and inclusion standards for Oscars® eligibility in the Best Picture category, as part of its Academy Aperture 2025 initiative. The standards are designed to encourage equitable representation on and off screen in order to better reflect the diversity of the movie-going audience.” It will have a positive impact that will help advance the narrative of race. Social media on the other hand will continue to have a greater impact because it’s audience is increasing daily and it’s impact felt
