Week 2 scope of practice and differentiated practice competencies. DB #1

Define critical thinking and evidence-based practice. Discuss what critical thinking in nursing practice entails and explain why it is important. Discuss the role of critical thinking and evidence-based practice as they relate to patient outcomes.

For the nurse, critical thinking is using the nursing process of assessment, diagnosis, planning/outcomes, implementation, and evaluation to provide the best outcomes for patients. Using this process allows the nurse to be proficient in identifying problems and quickly applying individualized interventions in hopes of saving that patient’s life. Critical- thinking is an essential skill for the nurse to have to ensure best patient outcomes. (Dean, 2018). According to the Nurse Journal: social community for nurses worldwide (2018), “in nursing, critical thinkers need to be: precise, complete, logical, accurate, clear, and fair.”

Evidence- based practices are practices that have been studied and using the most up to date research provides better patient outcomes. These practices are the foundation for safe and effective patient care. (Dean, 2018) An example of an evidence- based practice is bedside shift report. Bedside shift report follows the 2015 National Patient Safety Goal (NPSG) to improve communication amongst caregivers and to involve the patient and family in the plan of care. Using bedside shift report has increased patient satisfaction and decreased sentinel events during shift change. (Ofori- Atta, Binienda, & Chalupka, 2015) By implementing evidence- based practices in the hospital nurses have the ability to provide safe and standardized care to all patients.

DB #2

Describe how the nursing profession is viewed by the general public. Discuss factors that influence the public’s perception of nursing? Describe ways to educate the general public on the professional nurse’s role and scope of nursing within a changing health care system.

Nurses today are a trusted profession seen as honest, compassionate, and highly educated. Gallop poll has identified nursing as the number one most trusted and ethical profession in the US for the past 15 years. (Norman, 2016) This has not always been the case. I remember a male patient (in their early 100’s) asking me why I would be doing a whore’s job. For a long time, Hollywood has depicted nurses in a range of media formats from TV shows to beer commercials as “sexual stereotypes.” According to American Nurses Today, in 2001, the Center for Nursing Advocacy was founded to combat the nursing shortage. This group decided to change the depiction of nurses in the media by writing letters to producers who depicted nurses in a negative light. Other organizations like the Johnson and Johnson foundation produce commercials that show the nurse’s strength, perseverance, and dedication to their profession. As nurses, we also have an obligation to the profession by holding ourselves to the highest standards in all aspects of our life. (American Nurse today,2007) We are registered nurses. We have worked hard for our license to practice medicine. Change in the public’s perception, starts with change within ourselves. Even though our job has been frowned upon in the past. We must recognize the value of what we do. When asked about our profession stand tall and proud; say I am a registered nurse. I am an essential part of the healthcare team and I am proud of the care that I provide. In today’s growing healthcare system, it is essential that nurses be part of the change. There are a variety of social media networks that can be used as a platform for educating the public. Advertising nursing accomplishments, writing health related articles, and depicting the nurse as an educated and autonomous individual are just a few ways that social media can help change the perception of nursing.
