Vaccine Hesitancy

Description Vaccine hesitancy refers to the reluctance of a specified population to vaccinate against a vaccine-preventable disease despite the availability of vaccines. The organization forecasts an additional 1.5 million deaths can be avoided in the event vaccination is improved around the world.

In 2019, cases of measles outbreaks in countries that had eliminated the disease have been attributed to vaccine hesitancy. Vaccination hesitancy is caused by various aspects which include lack of adequate community sensitization, lack of confidence in the vaccines, and social and cultural beliefs.

Describe the policy in each country related to the identified healthcare issue In the US, all states mandate for the vaccination of children before enrolling in public schools (Averhoff et al. 980). However, all states have exemptions for individuals with medical contraindications to vaccines.

In the UK, there are no laws that mandate children to be vaccinated (Freed, 756). Parents retain consent of vaccination for their children under the age of 16. Individuals above the age of 16 have personal liability.

 

What are the strengths of this policy? America’s policy on vaccination is significant as it ensures most children within the country are immunized. This is critical in creating the so called herd immunity’. In a similar manner, the UK puts into place significant policies in order to protect its citizens against health issues on a global scale.
General Notes/Comment s This policy is in need of a review in order to implement stronger measures to protect Americans in an ever globalized world. This policy should be reviewed in the wake of the current global pandemic. Global pandemics are bound to increase in future and there is greater need to protect the public from preventable diseases.
