NURS 6002 Week 3 | Part 3: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics
Part 1: Writing Sample: The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity
Academic Integrity is the foundation for every aspect of all levels of the educational enterprise, from preschool through graduate school. According to the International Center for
Academic Integrity (ICAI,2013), one of the fundamental values to academic integrity is honesty.
Most graduate courses require students to write papers to pass all parts of their courses. Writing practices have been one of the issues related to breaches of academic integrity (Bretag. 2016). Surprisingly, student nurses are more likely to cheat on their writing assignments than other university students (Glasper. 2016). Plagiarism such as failure to cite the original sources, downloading the assignment from the internet, and incorrect paraphrasing have been the concerns related to breach of academic integrity to student nurses.
The Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements provides the nurses the professional, ethical standard to use in decision-making and ethical analysis in every aspect of their life (American Nurses Association, 2015). When nurses act as patients advocate to maintain their quality of life and protect their rights, nurses often face ethical dilemmas in situations that they don’t know how to make the right decisions. The 9 Provisions in Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements support the nurses doing their best to make the right decision when fulfilling their professional and ethical obligation in all settings (American Nurses Association, 2015). Ethical conflict often occurs when nurses deliver quality of patient care in clinical settings. Nurses need solid knowledge, such as the provisions in the Code of Ethics, to resolve the ethical problems and take moral actions when in need.
Understanding why the breach of academic integrity happens and developing ways to deterrent to plagiarism can promote academic integrity. For example, SafeAssign can check students’ papers for inappropriate use of resources in their writing assignment. And then it can help students identify their problems in writing and improve their writing skills via learning more about proper use of citation. Grammarly is an excellent tool for academic writing, especially for international students. Grammarly provides the feedback or suggestions to your writing, and then the writer can decide if the suggestions are appropriate and incorporate into your writing.
Paraphrasing can be used in your writing to restate another person’s words or ideas, which requires proper citation. Paraphrasing helps you understand the original ideas the author conducts and summarize a long piece and put them together. NURS 6002 Walden University Academic and Professional Integrity
PART 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work
As graduate student nurses, academic integrity is the same important as professional integrity. Bretag (2018) indicated that “there is a correlation between students’ self-reported academic integrity breach behavior at university and unethical conduct in professional practice” (para 2). According to Glasper (2016), a large number of student nurses committing breaches of academic integrity enter their professional register in the same way. Nurse students need to be ethical to maintain our academic integrity to do the best for our patients in every setting.
The first strategy to maintain academic integrity and ethics is to be aware of the plagiarism rules. Knowing “fail to adequately cite the original source material from which they took words and ideas” is considered plagiarism (Walden University Academic Skills Center, n.d.). I did not realize that paraphrasing should have a citation until I learned the rules of plagiarism from the MSN program. I also learned how to properly cite all sources we need to use in the paper.
Secondly, I need to build confidence to express my idea or opinion in the paper and improve my time management skills. Sometimes, I do not believe in myself and writing enough to meet the deadline. At last, I need to utilize Grammarly and SafeAssign wisely. SafeAssign can help to identify the problems in writing and improve their writing skills via learning more about the proper use of citations. Grammarly is a great tool to provide feedback or suggestions to the paper. NURS 6002 Walden University Academic and Professional Integrity
