There are three levels of health promotion: Primary, secondary and tertiary. Primary prevention is for the population that is healthy and keeps them free from disease as in vaccinations. Educating the public on the importance of nutrition and exercise and by letting them make their own decisions. This utilizes active and passive participation (GCU, 2018).

Secondary prevention is for the population that are at risk for a problem. Doing monthly self-breast exams, mammograms and prostate checks will alert the patient of an illness early on so treatment can be done right away.

Tertiary prevention is where the patient has the disease and is not curable. At this level the patient is looking at rehabilitating and getting back to their lives and society. This might include getting the right medical equipment that is needed for activities of daily living where they reside (GCU, 2018). All of these involve educating your patients.

By knowing the health status of your patient may support individualized care (de Klein, Peters, Hul, Akkermans, Veen, Vercoulen, Bischoff, Schermer, 2020). The level of prevention will determine what type of education you would provide to the patient. Primary prevention education will be basic knowledge. Secondary prevention will take a closer look at the disease and educate on preventing further complications. Tertiary prevention will need a higher education; like, the proper way to take your medications, how to get around in your wheelchair and how to live with the disease.
