Introduction

Patients typically seek out medical services that will aid in their recovery from their ailments. The increased use of influenza vaccination, for instance, has been shown to be successful among populations at high risk, such as homeless people. Although the majority of individuals are reluctant to get the influenza vaccine because of issues like insufficient knowledge, it is crucial to educate them on why they should. To make sure that patients are aware of the consequences of not getting the vaccine, nurses must carefully discuss the subject of influenza.

The influenza vaccine is considered one of the most effective ways of preventing infectious respiratory conditions and flu. The purpose of this paper is the evaluation of the current research that reflects the challenges that healthcare professionals face on the issue of influenza vaccination and measures that should be taken to increase the awareness of people on the need for influenza vaccination.

Comparison of Research Questions

Through the evaluation of different studies, it is clear that most people do not have enough information about the influenza vaccine, which makes them have different attitudes towards the vaccine. Most evidence-based researches have addressed the same research question with regard to the challenges that nurses are facing in influenza vaccination and measures that should be taken to increase awareness. Zhang, While & Norman (2016) research question focused on the relationship between proper education and influenza vaccination.

The study assessed the knowledge of nurses and other healthcare professionals on influenza vaccination, focusing on common misconceptions about the influenza vaccine. The research shows that nurses and healthcare workers who have been vaccinated tend to have more knowledge about influenza and the risk factors associated with influenza than those who have not been vaccinated (Zhang, While & Norman, 2016). However, vaccinated and unvaccinated health providers indicate that they could be effective in promoting influenza vaccination among patients if they are provided with the right knowledge about the influenza vaccine.

Ali et al. (2018), focuses on the research question that evaluates the knowledge, attitude, and awareness of doctors on the influenza vaccination, and why they are not vaccinated. In the study, Ali et al. (2018) conducted a cross-sectional study of doctors in three major healthcare settings. The study concluded that only a few medical doctors are vaccinated in the influenza vaccination despite the recommendations and guidelines provided by the government. The study indicates that there is a need to increase awareness on the need for influenza vaccines, and enhance the access and availability of the vaccine to improve vaccinations and health outcomes.

Comparison of Sample Populations

In reference to similar studies dealing with the questions on attitudes of people towards the influenza vaccine, it is important to assess the size of the sample population that was during the study to weigh the strength of the evidence provided. The research by Zhang, While & Norman (2016) used 12 research studies that had investigated the relationship between knowledge and attitude of nurses and health care workers towards the influenza vaccine. The research studies used by authors had been published between 2010 and 2016.

The articles used for this study were descriptive and mainly relied on self-report data. The study found that there is a relationship between peoples’ attitudes and knowledge of nurses of influenza vaccination. Ali et al. (2018) used a cross-sectional study with a sample of 215 doctors participating in the study.  Only 19 doctors reported having been vaccinated from influenza. The study established that major challenges towards the influenza vaccination are unfamiliarity with the vaccination, unavailability of the vaccine, high cost, and insufficient health workers to administer the vaccine.

Comparison of the Limitations of the Study

The methodology that was used in acquiring the data and information from various studies had biased findings because most of the studies used relied on the generalizable findings.  Both studies by Ali et al. (2018) and Zhang, While & Norman (2016) gave generalizable results instead of focusing on particular units within the healthcare sector. For instance, the study by Zhang, While & Norman (2016) used self-reported data, which may not reflect the behavior of respondents at the time of the study. However, the study by Ali et al. (2018) used first-hand data from medical doctors, which could be more reliable. The study by Zhang, While & Norman (2016) failed to use a strong study design that would examine the attitude of people towards influenza vaccination and challenges that nurses and health workers encounter.

Conclusion and Recommendations

Using the research studies was effective in responding to the PICOT question in reference to the attitude of people towards influenza vaccination, knowledge, and challenges that health works are facing. There is a valid proof from the studies that people have inadequate information regarding influenza vaccination, which makes them have a negative attitude towards vaccination. Besides, studies established that the majority of healthcare workers and nurses had not been vaccinated with influenza; thus, their knowledge about the vaccination is inadequate. The studies have established similar results on the need to educate healthcare workers and the public on the need for influenza vaccination.

From the barrier of inadequate knowledge about influenza vaccination, further research is recommended on misconceptions of the vaccine among medical doctors and the public. Healthcare workers are recommended to be at the forefront of taking the vaccine and encourage other people to have immunization against influenza. The most recommended practice of reducing flue and communicable respiratory infections is though the influenza vaccine. Hospitals are recommended to make the vaccination mandatory for all healthcare professionals.
