Nursing Assignment Cultural Competence Example
A nurse can get the cultural information of a patient in several ways. Some of the ways include simply asking the patient about their culture. Asking the patient is the most direct way of learning about their culture. Also, asking prevents the nurse from making assumptions that may be wrong. For instance, a nurse may ask the patient about their religion and faith to ensure that he or she does not violate the faith of the patient and remains respectful throughout their interaction. Another way of knowing about the culture of the patient is by asking the people who accompany them (Laramée & Garneau, 2018). For instance, if the person has been brought in by their friends or relatives, asking them about the culture of the person may help the nurse gain some cultural idea about the patient. A nurse can also learn about the culture of the patients by observing them.
In some cultures, people dress in particular ways. For instance, Muslim women wear hijabs when they get out of their houses. Therefore, seeing someone with a hijab will mean that the person is a Muslim woman and should, therefore, be treated with respect to their religion. Observation works when people of a culture dress in ways that identify their culture. Cultural competence betters care. Being culturally competent involves being knowledgeable about the cultures of patients. For instance, a culturally competent nurse understands how people from various cultures want to be treated and the meanings of various actions regarding particular cultures (Laramée & Garneau, 2018). Being culturally competent improves patient satisfaction. Culturally competent nurses treat people from diverse cultures with respect and therefore the patients feel satisfied with their services. Cultural competence also makes patients develop trust with the nurses and thus create a good working relationship.
