Case study: Managed and integrated systems

Abstract

The issue of health care services has continued for a long time now as the industry has only scarce resources that are needed by most people in the community. The presence of barriers to accessing health care services has created disparities leading to economic problems among many families. There has been an issue of low numbers of physicians in most healthcare facilities, which has resulted in pressure among non-physician personnel like nurses who are forced to attend to every patient without a qualified physician. An excellent example of such a scenario is the case of UNC health care owned by the state of North Carolina. Therefore, there is a need for integrated systems and integrated care which involves the coordination of services to maintain a continuous operation and improve the quality of service offered to the patients. This paper seeks to highlight all the essential facts about managed and integrated systems.

Introduction

UNC health care is a nonprofit and integrated health system dedicated to providing quality health care services to its clients. UNC Health care’s mission is to ensure improvement in terms of health and well-being of the citizens of Carolinas and other people they serve on their daily basis (Burgard et al., 2014). All these are accomplished by providing good leadership and excellence in the various areas of patient care, education, and research. The healthcare facility’s vision is to ensure they become the leading health care and academic system. The issue of health care services has continued to be an issue for a long time now as the industry has only scarce resources that are needed by most people in the community. The health care facility was able to integrate a health and information technology system that has helped about five hundred physicians from the facility by quickly accessing the patient’s reports through the prescription drug monitoring program’s online platform. The facility has effectively used the managed integrated systems, especially by integrating an electronic medical recording system.

Body

The introduction of a managed care model in any health care facility helps integrate health care delivery in the entire health system. A managed care model is a form of a delivery system organized to control costs (Cohen et al., 2018). Managed care model helps in care delivery since it gives the patients the privilege or options for medical coverages. It is one of the popular health insurance policies known since the 1980s. The policy was able to help most patients in clearing their medical bills. It also helps ensure care delivery by offering better drugs, especially for prescribed medications, making them affordable to everyone. The insurance policy also helps by delivering accredited care and providing extension in terms of network providers. In collaboration with the UNC, managed care has achieved extraordinary efficiency and quality service delivery. Additionally, everyone in the community can now access quality care at any time without worrying about medical expenses.

Integrated care delivery has managed to help UNC health care management deliver appropriate and quality care to North Carolina citizens. The integrated delivery system involves a network of several health care facilities operated by a single parent organization. UNC consists of nine hospitals and other ambulatory clinics that have helped provide quality care to their clients. Other health delivery systems can adopt UNC’s approach by putting more effort and introducing better electronic bookkeeping and medical records systems to quickly get information about various patients (Poghosyan, 2012). Adoption of UNDC’s approach will help improve how they serve their clients; they can also opt to ask for help from multiple stakeholders to open up more branches to increase the facility’s population.

The integration of nurse practitioners and physician assistants has enhanced medical services continuity in health care facilities. Nurse practitioners and physicians assistants play a significant role in ensuring service delivery to their clients. Nurse practitioners can serve as many patients as possible, and assistant physicians have made it easier for patients to get adequate care since they always give physicians a hand. Assistant physician help physicians monitor their patients to ensure they get appropriate care and go through the recommended recovery system.

Conclusion

UNC health care is a nonprofit and integrated health system dedicated to providing quality health care services to its clients. The health facility came in to fill the gap in health care by providing quality care to many patients in the shortest time possible. They also have an electronic medical record-keeping that makes it easier for physicians to attend to various patients without taking a lot of time. One of the facility’s opportunities is the availability of an educational section; hence, there is a surety that the graduates of that school are well qualified to fill the medical industry gap. Integrated managed care is also another beneficial insurance policy that has helped the healthcare industry provide quality care to its patients at affordable costs.

SWOT ANALYSIS

SWOT analysis is usually performed by the top management involved in making strategic decisions for the company/organization. It is a tool used by managers to identify strengths, weaknesses, threats, and opportunities present. In my case, some of UNC health care’s strengths are that they have various branches, making them serve a more significant portion of the population (Wenke et al., 2013). They already have a monopoly which makes them preferred by most of the residents of North Carolina. They also have an electronic medical record-keeping that makes it easier for physicians to attend to various patients without taking a lot of time.

One of the hospital’s weaknesses is a shortage of physicians to attend to the vast population of patients in need of their services. This makes most patients move to other clinics since they spend most of their day waiting to be served by a particular physician hence becoming tiresome. There is also a rise in the other nine branches’ management costs, making it hard for the management to distribute the scarce materials. The hospital also consists of a teaching/ academic section that requires a lot of attention to ensure better physicians are brought up and fill the medical personnel needed in the facility and increase management cost.

One of the facility’s opportunities is the availability of an educational section; hence, there is a surety that the graduates of that school are well qualified to fill the medical industry gap. They also have qualified and well-trained physicians and nurses that offer better and quality services to the clients. The availability of trainees helps the facility save on the cash used for additional care providers’ higher services (Wenke et al., 2013). One of the significant threats of the health care facility is competition from other healthcare facilities that are introducing more recent and sophisticated ways of handling patients. Another danger is the ever-rising cost of medical care; this makes it difficult for the management to ensure quality service is delivered to everyone, even to those unable to cover their medical bills.
