A wide range of professional nursing organizations, including The American Nurses Association (ANA) and the American Psychiatric Association (APNA), offer nurses support, education, and a wealth of other resources, including chances for mentorship in our areas of specialization. The APNA provides a message board where you can connect with other professionals locally and nationally. In order to better represent our clients, networking with other experts is a wonderful method to learn about new EBP, the most recent advancements, and other resources.
The larger professional organizations are much better equipped to advocate for nurses upstream: “For more than 40 years, ANA-PAC has spoken on behalf of its nurse members before Congress. Some of the issues the ANA is presently working on are health reform, safe staffing, nursing workforce development, and getting appropriate practice guidelines for advanced practice nurses.” (Helbig,2018)
“The American Psychiatric Nurses Association is a professional association organized exclusively for charitable, educational, and scientific purposes. It provides leadership to promote psychiatric-mental health nurses, improve mental health care for culturally diverse individuals, families, groups, and communities, and shape health policy for the delivery of mental health services.” (APNA, 2022). By growing in our professions and becoming active and participating members of professional organizations like the ANA and the APNA, we can truly grow as nurses and be better prepared to advocate for those under our care at all levels. We can genuinely advocate Up Stream, Mid-Stream, and Downstream.
“ANA believes that advocacy is a pillar of nursing. Nurses instinctively advocate for their patients, in their workplaces, and their communities, but legislative and political advocacy is no less important to advancing the profession and patient care.” (ANA,2022)

The general public, policymakers, healthcare administrators, and experts can also learn about a variety of topics from specialized associations and their members. Nursing organizations understand the need for cooperation and, where appropriate, work with other nursing and health-related professional associations. Because they have the tools to lobby, study, and teach, professional nursing organizations are highly appreciated. Without them, it would take a lot longer for nurses to make progress within the profession.
