  • Reflect on the Resources related to digital information tools and technologies.
  • Consider your healthcare organization’s use of healthcare technologies to manage and distribute information.
  • Reflect on current and potential future trends, such as use of social media and mobile applications/telehealth, Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled asset tracking, or expert systems/artificial intelligence, and how they may impact nursing practice and healthcare delivery.

Post a brief description of general healthcare technology trends, particularly related to data/information you have observed in use in your healthcare organization or nursing practice. Describe any potential challenges or risks that may be inherent in the technologies associated with these trends you described.

Next, explain which healthcare technology trends you believe are most promising for impacting healthcare technology in nursing practice and explain why. RE: Discussion – Week 6 initial post

Advancement in the technology used in healthcare, patient care areas to include experience and outcomes has improved these areas (Mcgonigle & Garver Mastrian, 2018). My healthcare system utilizes Epic as our electronic medical record (EMR). The Epic system is user-friendly while not always intuitive. The customizable features allow for better patient care. Epic has navigators with best practices integrated into them to help the healthcare provider and nurse apply the patient’s suggested practices as they apply to the current situation.

One of these navigator tabs is for discharge; on this tab, medications, discharge instructions, follow-up appointment, and a QR bar scan code with an accompanying link to our patient portal. All of this is printed out for the patient to carry home. The portal set up has security features, such as encryption for each unique session on the portal to ensure that patient information is protected. Teaching and support methods are needed to assist the older population by using the patient portal (Son & Nahm, 2019). Family members involved in the patient’s care can help those that are internet or mobile app challenged.  Healthcare Technology Trends Discussion

Skiba (2017) found that 52% of patients used the internet to access their information, 38% have mobile devices, 19% use wearable devices; a combination approach of patient-centered care modalities can reduce the number of adverse events and increases patient satisfaction. Through the implementation of patient portals, patient satisfaction increased and adverse events decreased (Dykes, 2017). Patient portals allow for a continuation of the patient experience from their phone or home computer’s convenience. The patient has access to lab and diagnostics taken while in the hospital within 48 hrs of discharge through the portal.

The portal includes the discharge paperwork information, including the follow-up appointments with contact information. The portal used to have a few limitations that have recently been fixed. One limitation was only medications that were administered in the hospital and any new medications prescribed were listed on the portal. Now the portal has the patient before admission medications added, the patient can modify this list.

Items have a strike-through mark, and this allows for primary care providers (PCP) to see what patients have taken. Another limitation used to be that patients had to request their medical records be forwarded to their PCP. This made it difficult to obtain in time for many of the follow-up appointments. Now patients are able to send a request for their record to be accessed by their PCP through the portal.  Healthcare Technology Trends Discussion

Promising healthcare technology

Mobile applications to include the use of patient portals are technology and data gathering opportunities that will advance healthcare. A strategically designed patient portal will have the capability to communicate patient information across multiple platforms. Portals provide links for educational materials about procedures or medications the patient is prescribed. These educational materials re-introduce subject matter that is discussed during clinical or hospital visits.

The treatment team, including the nurse can provide feedback through the portal if the patient asks a question through email or a chat box. Another feature recently added was the ability to schedule appointments with any specialty or primary care provider to include lab work within our health system. Engaging patients and caregivers in their health decisions provide for better outcomes. Healthcare Technology Trends Discussion

Technology Trends in Healthcare

Technology is more and more frequently being utilized in trends in healthcare. This can especially be seen during the pandemic, which has showcased need for healthcare professionals to be able to utilize these tools for patient care. Telehealth is one of the fastest growing trends in healthcare that utilizes information technology such as telephones, computers and applications to provide remote access to healthcare (McGonigle, & Mastrian, 2017). Providers can assess, diagnose, and educate patients utilizing tools for telehealth such as cameras and recording and uploading stethoscopes, all through telehealth applications on a phone or computer. Because of this increased need of care, telehealth utilization has had an increase of 50% in just the first quarter of 2020 (Centers for Disease Control, 2020).

One of the risks of utilizing telehealth is the lack of ability to complete an in-person healthcare assessment. Because communication is done over telecommunication, a healthcare provider must use in large part information provided by the patient and assess only what is visibly shown by the patient, providing an opportunity for the provider to miss valuable information and opening a provider up if litigation were to occur (Klein, 2019). Healthcare Technology Trends Discussion For example, unless the patient has a recording stethoscope, they are unable to listen to the heart or lungs which could differentiate in sounds between a diagnosis of asthma or pneumonia.

One of the benefits to this trend and tools are the increased access and availability to healthcare. In rural settings especially, telehealth can provide access to specialists in real time, such as neurologists for assessing a stroke. In my institution, we do not have an inhouse neurologist at all hours of the day. The system can allow a neurologist to remotely assess patients with the assistance of nurses and the NIH stroke scale. This is critical as it decreases valuable time a stroke patient needs on receiving care such as antithrombotic therapy (Mayo Clinic, 2020). Healthcare Technology Trends Discussion

This trend and technology is the most valuable of health trends due to the opportunities surrounding it. It provides means for health care in settings that are traditionally lacking basic healthcare, and especially specialty care. It has opportunities for growth, such as in the development of recording stethoscopes and other remote access assessment tools. For example, in my healthcare setting, it saves patients by allowing immediate intervention, decreasing tissue damage due to waiting on a specialist to arrive in house.

Healthcare Information Technology Trends

Technology has become an inevitable part of nursing and healthcare. In my healthcare organization, technology has been employed for different nursing and health care processes. One of the crucial technologies applied in the workplace is social media for interaction with patients. According to Skiba (2017), the current trend of social media use has seen the increased citizens’ engagement with care through social media and mobile apps.

This trend also includes the use of social media and apps for health monitoring. My healthcare organization recommends the use of diabetes monitoring apps for people diagnosed with diabetes. The increased engagement of patients with technology is a positive trend. Healthcare Technology Trends Discussion

Elsewhere, although healthcare technology presents an opportunity to improve care, it also presents inherent risks and challenges. One of the risks of social media use is data breaches and unauthorized access to patients’ information. Healthcare technologies risk patient confidence and access to their personally identifiable information hence present a challenge in the implementation. The safety of information received through social media communications is also a potential risk.

For instance, when patients use unverified mobile apps for their health, they may not access verified and evidence-based recommendations and strategies. On the other hand, social media has the potential benefit of increasing patient participation in care such as pain assessment and management (Rao-Gupta et al., 2018). Therefore, despite the risks of data when using healthcare technology, there is the potential benefit of increasing patient engagement and participation in their care.  Healthcare Technology Trends Discussion

Lastly, I believe the Internet of Things (IoT) is the most promising in improving patient outcomes. This is because in the Internet age, the connection of devices and healthcare technologies is increasingly important. Interoperability, machine-to-machine communications, and automation are aimed to smoothen the patient care workflow and improve efficiency. This improvement in healthcare technology is likely to reduce adverse events and improve patient satisfaction with care (Dykes et al., 2017). Generally, the implementation and improvement of IoT in healthcare will enhance care outcomes and reduce adverse events.
