Literature

Review

In order to create a civil society one must act in the common good and not self- interest. Braxton and Bayer believe that academic incivility has been around for centuries (Clark, 2008a). Education not only develops the professional career but also promotes social responsibility thus playing a major role in the growth of civil societies. The authors reviewed two case studies on the topic of incivility in nursing education by Luparell and Lashley and deMenses. Should be a referenced and cited synthesis that addresses 1) prior research, 2) the gap, 3) study focus or problem – in that order.

Problem Statement It is not known what the students’ and faculty perceptions of incivility within the nursing program are. (Clark, 2008b). Key is to write it as per GCU standard: Example: It is not known if and to what extent student and faculty perceive the causes and remedies that impact incivility in nursing education.
Research Questions How do nursing students and nurse faculty members contribute to incivility in nursing education?
What are some of the causes of incivility in nursing education?
What remedies might be effective in preventing or reducing incivility?
Good
Sample The authors gathered samples from 36 nurse faculty and 168 nursing students. 35.9% of the students responded while 41.6% of the faculty responded. Good.
Describe Phenomena (Qualitative) The authors identified four main themes in the research.

1.     Faculty perception of in-class incivility by students.

2.     Faculty perception of incivility outside class by students.

3.     Students perception of incivility by faculty

4.     Respondents perception on the causes of incivility.

From this the authors came up with 8 subthemes, emerging in the analysis of data,

Causes and remedies that impact incivility in nursing education.
Methodology  and Design They used qualitative and quantitative methodology. They used interpretive qualitative method to examine the students and faculty perception of incivility in nursing education. Authors state: Qualitative Methodology; Narrative Design.  Some quantitative instruments were modified into more open-ended data sources.
Purpose Statement The purpose of the research was to investigate the possible causes of incivility in nursing education thus suggest remedies (Clark, 2008b). The purpose of this qualitative narrative study is to examine how student and faculty perceive the causes and remedies that impact incivility in nursing education in the associate and baccalaureate degree nursing programs of a metropolitan public university.
Data Collection Instruments and Approach They emailed the nursing students and faculty the Incivility in Nursing Education survey (INE). The survey was open ended in order to get opinions of the students and faculty. What was the background or development of this data source?

Missing the data collection steps/ procedures.

Data Analysis Approach They calculated INE’s reliability using Cronbach’s alpha (average of 0.82 for the faculty and 0.78 for the students). The authors separately analyzed the collected data and identified emerging themes (Clark, 2008b). Emerging themes included both in-class and out of class uncivilized behaviour and the causes of the behaviour. In-class incivility included dominating discussions, side-conversations and challenging professors on test scores. Out of class incivility included inappropriate emails, discrediting faculty and late assignment submissions. These incivilities were mainly caused by stress, and disrespect. Was there a reference for the data analysis process?
