Excelsior College Cultural Brokering and Health Outcomes Discussion

Module 2

In this second discussion, you will have an opportunity to locate an article from the Excelsior Library and share a resource with the class. In this Resource Sharing Discussion Forum, you will post an article to share as described below. Then you will respond to at least one other classmate. You will also moderate your post so that you can respond to your classmates who comment on your post.

Go the Excelsior College Library (Links to an external site.) and find an article no more than 5 years old that addresses some aspect of culture that impacts health care. For example, you might select an article that discusses cultural perspectives on pain or illness in the family, or one that discusses health care patterns or disparities for a particular culture. (Remember there are many cultural groups, extending well beyond race/ethnicity or religion. This should help you to select a topic of interest.) Try to choose an article that you would enjoy talking with your peers about – something that piques your interest.

Next, compose a post that responds to the following questions. Please address both parts in your initial post. Your initial post should not exceed a page. Each section can be done thoughtfully in a well edited paragraph. The goal is to share your findings in a way that engages your classmates and encourages responses.

  1. Part I – Provide a brief summary of the article in one paragraph. Your brief summary should include the direct link to the article, a complete APA citation, the purpose or goal of the article, and the main points made by the author concerning identified barriers to culturally or linguistically appropriate care.
  2. Part II – In your second paragraph, identify which of the six cultural brokering examples in Appendix A of the Georgetown Cultural Brokering Guide (Links to an external site.) [PDF, File Size 304 KB] most closely aligns with the cultural issue profiled in your chosen article. Based on what we have learned this week, would another form of cultural broker be equally or more culturally appropriate? Please explain.

Post your response no later than the fifth day (Friday) of this module so that other members of the class will have an opportunity to read your posting. Students are encouraged to read through the posted resources and use the citations to secure articles that are of interest.

Consult the Discussion Posting Guide for information about writing your discussion posts. It is recommended that you write your post in a document first. Check your work and correct any spelling or grammatical errors. When you are ready to make your initial post, click on “Reply.” Then copy/paste the text into the message field, and click “Post Reply.”

To respond to a peer, click “Reply” beneath her or his post and continue as with an initial post.

This discussion will be graded using a rubric. Please review this rubric prior to beginning the discussion. You can view the rubric on the Course Rubrics page within the Start Here module. All discussions combined are worth 35% of your final course grade.

Completion of this discussion assesses the following outcomes:

  • Apply cultural brokering concepts to culturally diverse groups. (CO4)
  • Analyze the use of culturally and linguistically appropriate services in health settings. (CO4)
