Discussion 2

The purpose of obtaining consent is to give respondents and other subjects important control over information about themselves, even if the question of harm does not arise (Groves et al., 2009).  Researchers are obligated to secure informed consent from each respondent before conducting research.  Stangor (2007) stated that informed consent involves several aspects, each of which is designed to reduce the possibility of ethical problems.  Competent respondents must understand the elements of the informed consent such as:  who is conducting the research study, the procedures of how the data collected, the potential risks, how the data results used, and their rights as a participant.

One ethical dilemma is audiotape recording without getting consent from the respondents. Trustworthiness is the foundation of integrity (Lussier & Achua, 2016), which allows the participants free to express their thoughts with the assumption that their personal feelings would remain confidential.  Researchers must meet with all the respondents and inform them of how the data was collected.  Thomas (2014) stated being transparent with communication, fosters an environment of open transmission of information, which allows one to be commitment and trust.  Respondents are willing to comply if researchers are honest and genuine with the purpose of their research study.

According to the American Psychological Association (1993), psychologists must understand culture and ethnicity factors to provide appropriate psychological services effectively.  Different cultures and ethnicity have a direct impact on research analysis, which can add value to the research study.  Everyone has encountered individuals who have spoken with a native tongue or an improper dialect.  However, Psychologists’ practice incorporates an understanding of the client’s ethnic and cultural background (APA, 2013), which means ignoring different cultures and ethnic groups is not an option.  Researchers must devise a plan that educates others on different cultures and ethnic backgrounds.  APA (2013) states that the client’s familiarity and comfort with the majority culture as well as ways in which the client’s culture may add to or improve various aspects of the majority culture and/or of society at large and social change.  Psychologists respect the roles of family members and community structures, hierarchies, values, and beliefs within the client’s culture (APA, 2013).
