The role of the advanced registered nurse is continually evolving. When they first emerged in the 1960’s they were primarily brought about due to the shortage of physicians. They were taught to assess, diagnose, and treat medical conditions for many that were poor and in rural areas. (DeNisco & Baker, 2016) This then evolved into requiring a master’s degree during the 1990’s, and in 2004 a Doctor of Nursing Practice was recognized as an entry level advanced practice nursing degree as well.

The advanced registered nurses have many different options to serve their patients. They are board certified and are used to treat all ages and conditions including: neonatology, pediatrics, family practice, mental health, oncology, and women’s health. No matter the specialty of the advanced registered nurse, the expectation is that the nurse has the ability to practice at the highest scope of their license, while maintaining their professional code of ethics. (Porter & Weberg, 2019) The professional code of ethics results in advocating for each patient while maintaining their professional obligations to continue to advance their own profession.

The demand for advanced registered nurses will only continue to increase due to the aging population. The key to maintaining the population’s health is in preventive care and focusing on wellness. In the 1960’s the advanced registered nurse began by diagnosing medical conditions and then reacting to what interventions could help them. Today, advanced registered nurses are taking a more proactive approach and preventing or minimizing chronic conditions
