  • In the early 20th century, rural areas of China experienced deplorable health conditions. Due to extreme poverty and lack of access to adequate medical care, nearly 80% of China’s population, the percentage living in rural areas, teetered on the verge of death. In an attempt to solve the public health crisis, the Chinese government commissioned doctors, known as “barefoot doctors.” These doctors used specific behaviors that connected to and were understood by residents in the community. With specific behaviors that shaped a style of leadership, these doctors educated rural residents on basic healthcare practices. Although “barefoot,” these doctors projected a wealth of knowledge, leading others to better health and a better way of life (Valentine, 2005).

  • Previous to the 1990s, an individual’s Intelligent Quotient (IQ) remained an unquestioned, central standard of learning. With a high IQ, it may be assumed an individual might be well-versed in knowledge in order to tackle any problem, making effective and efficient decisions. Yet, contemporary research also indicates that good problem-solving and quality decision making did not always stem from one’s IQ, but more importantly one’s Emotional Intelligence (EI). In fact, a variety of studies have shown that “emotional intelligence competencies account for anywhere from 24 to 69 percent of performance success” (Lynn, 2008).

For this paper, select an article depicting a behavioral perspective to public health leadership. Think about particular strengths and limitations of this perspective. Consider how this perspective relates to Trait Theory of leadership.

  • WRITE a brief explanation of the behavioral perspective reflected in the article you selected. Then explain the strengths and limitations of this perspective. Finally, explain how this perspective you selected relates to both Trait Theory and the Skills Approach.

  • For this Project Assignment, think about common trends in public health leadership, or critical areas of need for leadership in the field. Prepare a literature review of scholarly articles related to your topic. This review should contain a minimum of 10 peer-reviewed or scholarly resources. Additionally, based on your conducted review of the current literature, create a problem statement that addresses identified gaps while incorporating implications for positive social change. Located within the Learning Resources for the week, you may find the information from Walden’s Online Writing Center helpful for your completion of the assignment.
  • It may appear as a hopeless cause to provide health programs in an area suffering severe health disasters and coping with internally displaced populations. For Htee Moo, cofounder of the Backpack Health Worker Team, hope was a driving force behind instituting more than 20 health clinics in Burma. With numerous health disasters, and countless human rights violations, there was no single, perfect style of healthcare leadership for this situation. Despite this challenge, Moo created the Backpack Health Team and various clinics throughout the country. Using a situational approach in public health leadership, Moo was able to provide primary health care services to more than 80,000 Burmese residents (Beyrer & Pizer, 2007). Though different situations exist among leaders, the skills and characteristics to adapt to particular situations are essential as a public health leader.
  • As pressures and demands for more standardized business structures fluctuate in society, leaders may experience challenges in developing consistent methods for solving public health problems. Though consistency may be necessary for enacting change, within many areas and localities, consistency may not be an option. As a result, a leader must be able to use a systems thinking approach to evaluate the best method for leadership contingent upon the circumstance.
  • This week’s self-assessment, located in your text, is a brief individual leadership assessment entitled, “Emotional Intelligence.” As mentioned in Week 5 of this course, understanding one’s emotional intelligence may increase a leader’s effectiveness in interacting with others to achieve organizational goals.
  • For this Project Assignment, think about common trends in public health leadership, or critical areas of need for leadership in the field.
  • Prepare a literature review of scholarly articles related to your topic in public health leadership. This review should contain a minimum of 10 peer-reviewed or scholarly resources.
  • Based on what you find in the current public health leadership literature, Create a problem statement, (Learn how to write a good one) It must addresses:
    • Identified gaps while incorporating implications for positive social change.
    • Located within the Learning Resources for the week, you may find the information from Walden’s Online Writing Center helpful for your completion of the assignment.

Organize the project in the following manner. Each section should be represented for a comprehensive overview

Literature Review and Problem Statement (5–7 pages):

  • The Literature Review section should be written in the narrative form integrating concepts from the articles you find. The section should include:
  • A synthesis of a minimum of 10 peer-reviewed, scholarly resources that give the reader a good overview of the issue. The section should show the reader common trends in public health leadership, or critical areas of need for leadership in the field
  • A description of theoretical gaps in the research area – Based on the research you just did in leadership, what seems to be missing (Theoretical gaps)?
  • Problem Statement should include:
    • An explanation of the specific problem that addresses identified gaps within the literature – If you are not sure of what a problem statement should include look it up. I’ll be looking for good comprehensive statements
    • An explanation of how your problem statement incorporates implications for positive social change – As students at Walden, “We” are preparing to become agents of social change, based on your leadership topic, the research you just did and the gaps you found how would you be a social agent for change?

For this paper, review the article by Fernandez, Cho, and Perry in the Learning Resources. Consider some of the strengths and limitations of situational leadership presented in the article. Then, select a leader with whom you are familiar and a situation or event in which the leader was involved. Think about how the Hersey and Blanchard Model of situational leadership applies to the leader and situation you selected.

  • Write a brief description of two strengths and two limitations of situational approaches to leadership. Then, briefly describe the leader and situation you selected. Next, evaluate the leader’s response and leadership effectiveness based on the Hersey and Blanchard model.
