As nurses, we are challenged to find and use reliable articles for discussions and assignments. “Nurses must base care decisions on best practice evidence from peer-reviewed research literature” (Miller, Graves, Jones, & Sievert, 2010) – therefore, it is essential for the peer-reviewed article/journal databases. The peer-reviewed article of interest I chose for this week’s discussion is from the Journal of Clinical Child & Adolescent Psychology. The article is titled Person-Centered Profiles Among Treatment-Seeking Children and Adolescents with Anxiety Disorders. This article under the Walden University library under the Taylor & Francis On-line Database. With a significant interest in adolescent psychiatry and hope to impact others by serving in this specialty. Along with extensive experience with my now twenty-year-old son, growing up with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and high anxiety. The article profiled four classes from mild to severe, overall functioning, family psychopahtyology, and family functioning (Norris et al., 2019).

I did not experience difficulties with this database. The database was user friendly with easy to understand sidebars to click and search. For example, it was easy to identify and click on “peer-review” and enter keywords into the “search” and obtain only peer-reviewed items within your keywords. From that step, it was easy to see options to click on “articles” or “journals” to find a significant listing of each. However, in other databases, I have had difficulties. Some databases are

not as easy to navigate with fewer options to get as specific as necessary and taking more time than necessary to find what I am looking for.

Usefulness to Colleagues

This database would be useful to my colleagues due to the ease of navigating with topic-specific options. Also, because the layout allows you to see all your options and get directly to your article of interest and has a “cite” option, however, it does not allow you to pick a specific style. There is an option to push further through the citing options; however, it requires a subscription. If you are struggling with an APA citing, like I am, you need to be careful with this portion. Furthermore, the chosen article clearly displays the article title, author(s), when published, website link to the article, and how many reviews. Lastly, there are options to download, save, or print your chosen article for referencing convenience.

I would recommend this database. Although, the citation options do not allow you to pick your citing style as other databases do. As mentioned, it does offer ease of navigation with options to choose during the initial search. The site layout make it easy to identify your article and journal options and ease of sorting. The convenience of the above-mentioned options and the ability to download at your fingertips will keep frustrations low and efficiency high.

The article I chose is called “Consensus statement for perioperative care in total hip replacement and total knee replacement surgery: Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS®) Society recommendations.” I chose this article because we use the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery or ERAS system at my hospital. It also pertains to my specialty because I work with post-operative knee and hip patients. The purpose of the article is to summarize the literature and propose recommendations for perioperative care with patients having total hip placements and knee replacements using the ERAS program (Wainwright et al., 2020).

I used the Walden Library EBSCO Discovery service and selected the box that allows you to search for peer-reviewed scholarly journals only (Walden University Library, 2020). With this option selected I could quickly find peer-reviewed scholarly sources. The Walden Library is easy to navigate and provides full-text PDFs that are easy to read. The articles contain abstracts so you can quickly decide if the topic interests you. I did not run into any difficulties finding an article of my interest in this database. There is a wide variety of options to choose from and using the filters provided it is easy to narrow down my search.

I believe the Walden University Library database would be useful to all my colleagues. There is such a wide variety of information to choose from and with the filters provided, you can narrow down all the peer-reviewed scholarly sources. “A peer-reviewed article has been carefully reviewed by a board of other scholars in the same field of study as the author (Tacoma Community College, 2020, para. 1) This makes it easier to finish your research because you know the information provided has been looked over by many scholars in the same field. The Walden University Library’s mission is “The Walden University Library is dedicated to fostering an information-literate Walden community” (Walden University, 2020). This shows that the Walden Library is dedicated to helping us succeed by keeping us informed with quality information. In conclusion, Walden University has a great library full of great peer-reviewed scholarly sources that are easy to find. Also, if you have any questions on how to use it, you can contact the librarian. I would recommend using this resource to all my colleagues.
