Assignment: Conducting Nursing Research

Response one: Through EBSCO, students from wide-ranging fields, as well as the general public, can access numerous research databases, electronic journals, books, and library services of all kinds. EBSCO maximizes the public’s access to the most relevant and reliable academic content efficiently. Two of my preferred library scholarly databases contained within the EBSCO research platform are CINAHL and Cochrane library. Both provide high-quality content and a full array of resources to find the desired information. CINAHL is a widely used research database by healthcare professionals as it provides access to the top nursing and allied health journals. CINAHL not only provides access to thousands of nursing-related journals but also contains continuing education modules, evidence-based care sheets, and research instruments (Grand Canyon University, n.d.). Cochrane is also a very useful database and a powerful tool to enhance knowledge as it includes a collection of six databases with high-quality and relevant information to health professionals.

Although Google scholar and a general internet search may prove useful to find credible and quality information in some instances, there are some clear disadvantages to using this method over academically approved research databases. Both methods frequently deliver general and unspecific results with high quantities of useless, repeated, or unrelated content. Also, the use of these search engine methods may not show all the articles listed in the scholarly databases or may produce inaccessible content due to broken links, defective webpages, and other related issues.

Response two: When doing research it is important to have credible and truthful sources to obtain information from. Through the GCU library you can utilize all the resources for articles, books, and other research the school provides. Trusting sites like Wikipedia and random articles on google is not a good idea when researching medical facts. GCU uses EBSCO as a search engine for scholarly articles. EBSCO is the leading provider of research databases, e-journals, magazine subscriptions, eBooks and discovery service for academic libraries (Grand Canyon University n.d.). ProQuest is another highly used source for articles. ProQuest databases provides a single source for scholarly journals, newspapers, reports, working papers, and datasets (“ProQuest,” 2019).

Where I feel you can find a good source of information through google and other internet searches, that information may not always be the most reliable when it comes to truth and actual research. Sometimes it is presented as a theory or opinion. Sticking to peer reviewed, actual research articles is the best way to get reliable information for whatever your topic of research may be.

Response three: The Grand Canyon University (GCU) library has a variety of databases that may be used to help find the best articles to support an evidence-based practice proposal. Two commonly used databases are CINAHL Complete and Pubmed. CINAHL Complete offers more than 1,300 journal articles covering more than 50 nursing specialties (Grand Canyon University, n.d.). PubMed comprises nearly 30 million citations for biomedical literature and life-science literature which provides research directed towards improving health (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, n.d.).

It is important to understand why someone should choose to use these two databases over Google Scholar and general internet searches when collecting data for research proposals. While Google Scholar and a generalized internet search offers a variety of data, databases such as CINAHL Complete and Pubmed are often the better option. Most importantly, the information found on these library databases are checked for accuracy and reliability. These databases offer the most up-to-date information, while the information found on the internet may be outdated or biased. The use of library scholarly databases allows the researcher to have more specific access to the topic being researched. The use of these library databases provides the ability sort the topic of research by topic, date, and relevance. It also allows for the selection of different types of materials such as journal articles, newspaper articles, and magazines (Howard Community College, n.d.). Many times, Google Scholar and the internet may not offer free access to full text journal articles, while many of the GCU library databases are able to do so. While Google Scholar and general internet searches offer unlimited information on a subject topic, when doing research for evidence-based proposals, there is a need to obtain the most recent, accurate, and reliable information. The use of library scholarly databases, such as CINAHL Complete and Pubmed is the best option for obtaining this information.
