Concern of Students and Nurses to Search Data of Interest

Two of the GCU Library scholarly databases that are likely to be most useful in finding research articles for the capstone change proposal are from CINAHL Complete and PubMed. CINAHL Complete offers full-text articles from top nursing and allied health journals. This database covers speech language pathology, nutrition, and 50+ nursing specialties (Journal Databases, n.d.). While searching the database, you can limit your search results by age group such as infant, adolescent, older adult, etc. or by special interest such as case management, advanced nursing practice, nursing administration, etc. The advanced search options allow the researcher to type in a minimal amount of words in the search bar and click through the search options to get more desirable results. Evidence-based care sheets can also be found on CINAHL, which will be highly useful for many of our capstone projects for this class.

PubMed is another useful database which also includes journal articles from MEDLINE, NIH articles, and articles from the NCBI online Bookshelf (Journal Databases, n.d.). PubMed has a search option named, “Clinical Queries.” A search on this will show new studies organized by clinical study categories, systemic reviews, and medical genetics (PubMed.gov, n.d.). PubMed describes this search option as a way to find the latest treatments for a disease or disorder.

These databases are better than Google Scholar or a general Internet search because they include full text. Google scholar articles are often locked and only display the abstract of an article. Google scholar search may also show broad topics unrelated to nursing practice. However, CINAHL Complete and PubMed show topics related to nursing and health sciences. These databases offer many options to limit search results, so you aren’t searching through thousands of articles unrelated to what you’re looking.
