This week your will learn about 6 approaches to personality. What approach do you believe explains the development of personality the best?

Here is a list of the 6 approaches:

Psychoanalytic and Neo-psychoanalytic

Trait approach

Biological approach

Humanistic approach

Behavioral/social learning approach

Cognitive approach

Psychoanalytic and Neo-psychoanalytic : study of the psychological forces underlying human behavior, feelings, and emotions and how these might be related to early experiences.

Trait approach: Traits can be defined as a stable characteristic that causes a person to depict a response to any situations in certain ways. Trait theories indicate that the traits are always constant regardless of the situations.

Biological approach: genetics and physiology, it is the only approach in psychology that examines thoughts, feelings, and behaviors from a biological and thus physical point of view.

Humanistic approach: approach to psychology that emphasizes empathy and stresses the good in human behavior. Another example of the humanistic perspective is for a person to focus on their strengths rather than their faults.

Behavioral/social learning approach: which assumes that learning is based on responses to environmental stimuli.

Cognitive approach: positive and negative reinforcement and self-actualization

Thought was pretty interesting

I learned quite a lot from watching this video. It is interesting and makes you think about how we differ so much from other cultures. For example, there is a part where someone came to his house stating he is the mayor and wants to talk to his children. This is in Denmark, which is acceptable. However, if you were to come to someone’s house here in the United States and ask to speak to their children and the owner did not know you, you would most likely not like what would happen to you. Hope you enjoy the video.

Do you think when formatting research and looking to publish that researchers bring in articles from other countries? Why or why not? Also would there be more support for researcher’s that have origins in other countries than those they currently reside?

  1. Discussion question:

How does personality differ from: a) character, and b) temperament?

  1. Reply to the teacher:

What Assumptions Do We Make about Character?

Think of the Lance Armstrong situation. He clearly made an immoral decision to cheat in the way that he did and yet he really has done quite a bit for raising awareness and funds for a good cause. Can this be seen as flawed character? The idea that he has a flawed character is one I think most of us would agree with. Would the philanthropic actions not be a reflection of character as well though? What I mean is he did give a lot of his time and energy to his charitable work. Being charitable is usually something that we might consider part of a person’s character. Of course by the same line of thinking being a cheater is also reflective of his character.

The point is, are the different aspects that make up a person’s character more complex than we would usually consider? In this case a charitable man was also a cheating man. Do we correctly assume that certain characteristics generally go together? Why might we tend to do this despite evidence otherwise?

7.Reply to the instructor:

In discussing personality, many people confuse the behaviors of a person and his or her personality traits. How can you really differentiate between the two? I like that you make mention of it changing through the life time. Now, how can someone really know who they are dealing with? if ever really right?

× How can I help you?
