- What influences an individual’s definition of health?
- How does lifespan development influence an individual’s definition of health?
Step 2 Read other students’ posts and respond to at least two of them
In your response to each peer, explain how lifespan development influences an individual’s health promotion. Use your personal experience, if it’s relevant, to support or debate other students’ posts. If differences of opinion occur, debate the issues professionally and provide examples to support opinions.

Your initial post should be 2-3 paragraphs long and follow the requirements outlined in the discussion rubric. Please add to the discussion in your peer responses with informative responses, instead of posts similar to “great idea! I really agree with you.” The initial post and the peer responses have different deadlines. Make sure that your discussion adheres to these deadlines.
APA guidelines and plagiarism prevention matter in discussion posts just like with other scholarly assignments. Cite all references appropriately using APA format.

Many factors influence our health. These are called determinants of health. One kind of determinant of health is what is in our genes and our biology. Another determinant is our individual behavior. This could include whether we smoke, exercise, or eat a balanced diet. Many people assume that their health results from their genes, behaviors, and how often they get sick or go to the doctor. But it’s not just how you live that determines how healthy you are. Social and physical environments have a big impact on our health, too. These are called the social determinants of health (Social and Cultural Factors that can Influence Your Health, 2020). Social determinants of health are the conditions that we live, learn, work, and play in. These conditions can influence the health and well-being of you and your community. They can include things like your education level, your exposure to violence, the way your community is designed, and if you have access to health care. These factors affect your ability to take part in healthy behaviors, affecting your health (Social and Cultural Factors that can Influence Your Health, 2020). Lifespan Development refers to the full process of human development from conception to death. It is a holistic approach to understanding all of the physiological, cognitive, emotional, and social changes that people go through since humans live according to the customs and values of a wide range of cultures and diversity (What is Lifespan Development? 2020).

According to Healthy People 2020, social determinants of health have an influence on an individual’s health and perception of health (Healthy People 2020, n.d.). Take me for example, a typical 50 year old male, slightly overweight, and taking two prescription medications for high blood pressure and cholesterol. I have easy access to quality healthcare, the means to pay for it, I live in a safe environment with a good support system, I am able to get exercise, and have access to quality food. These are my determinants of health and I consider myself healthy. If I go strictly by the World Health Organization’s (n.d.) definition of health—state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being not merely the absence of disease or infirmity—I may not be considered healthy, though my conditions are managed well. A definition of complete health as the absence of disease leaves little room for people with chronic diseases that are managed well (Fallon & Karlawish, 2019).
As people age into their elderly years they may have to manage more and more chronic conditions. An elderly person who manages several chronic conditions well by seeing a doctor regularly and taking prescription medications may see him or herself as healthy (Fallon & Karlawish, 2019). Again an individual’s determinants of health as outlined by Healthy People 2020 (n.d.) may directly influence a person’s definition or perception of health.
Respond to the following question based on this weeks lesson and, if it’s relevant, include your own personal experience
- Provide at least two examples of how nursing informatics has affected the nursing profession.
- Explain how these examples affect the care provided to patients.

One of the primary ways that informatics has changed nursing practice is through documentation. As the result of electronic charting, nurses are able to obtain information quickly and efficiently, using the information to improve the daily workflow. Storing the information electronically is more easily available to all members of the care team, including the physician and other care providers, as well as staff teams at other healthcare organizations that the patient may visit (Quinn J, 2017 five ways healthcare informatics help nurses). Another example is nurses protecting themselves: Charting via an electronic health record (EHR) helps protect nurses if patient care activities are ever called into question later (Quinn J 2017 five ways healthcare informatics help nurses). All the hard stops in an EHR is frustrating, but they are actually there to remind us of essential charting pieces, keeping record that the right patient care has been delivered.

Informatics in Nursing has so many benefits in supporting nursing practice from bedside, administrative, research and clinical areas. A day in the life of a nurse is busy, we don’t have time to remember everything we learned in nursing school, so having this technological support is necessary to take on the load of patients we do on a daily basis. A couple examples from previous experience in using healthcare informatics are one, the best feature of this system as a new grad especially is viable to have the routine documentation for medication re-assessments and access to medication interactions in the patient room, or a pop-up screen if something is not completable. Another example is there are on average six people on the interdisciplinary team for one patient, and if their considered a difficult case potentially up to twelve people to talk to, communicate with and follow up on their findings for this patient. If a patient starts to decline, you are able to look at notes, vitals, medications, and documentation of previous providers findings from MRI, CT’s, ect. This is such a great feature right at the computer screen at bedside. Because of these two examples, we are able to take on average about 1-2 more patients because of the time it takes to stop an issue before it occurs just from the system.

Week 02 Lesson: The Impact of Healthcare Informatics on Nursing
Step 1: Conduct research.
Research the World Health Organization’s (WHO) ranking of the world’s health systems.
Step 2: Post a response to the discussion board.
- In your post, address the following prompts:
- What measurements are used by the WHO to determine health rankings?
- How does the United States compare in health rankings with other developed nations?
- How does the United States compare in health rankings with developing nations?
- In your research, what did you find to be the two major differences between the health care system in a developing nation compared to the U.S. health care system?

Step 3: Read and respond to two other students’ posts
Read other students’ posts and respond to at least two of them. Use your personal experience, if it’s relevant, to help support or debate other students’ posts. If differences of opinion occur, debate the issues professionally and provide examples to support your opinions.
In addition to your original post, be sure to provide a meaningful response to at least two of your peer’s posts. Cite any sources in APA format.

Upon further research the World Health Organization is a specialized agency of the united Nations responsible for international public health. WHO uses five performances indicators to measure and determine health rankings. Those indicators include; overall level of population health; health inequalities (or disparities) within the population; overall level of health system responsiveness (a combination of patient satisfaction and how well the system acts); distribution of responsiveness within the population (WHO, 2020). According to Americas Health Rankings, the United States ranks 26th compared to other developed countries (“Comparison”, 2016). The differences between the health care systems in a developing nation compared to the United States is, the US devotes majority of its income to healthcare. The US also does not have a single system of health insurance, for instance health insurance is purchased privately or government provided. Another difference is the US possesses a multiplayer system in which a variety of third-party payers, including the federal and state governments and commercial health insurance are responsible for reimbursing health care providers (Ridic & Gleason, 2012).

According to the World Health Organization’s assessment of the world’s healthcare systems (2020), the United States ranks 37th of the 191 member nations. The factors that WHO looked at to make their rankings were:
- The overall level of public health
- Health inequalities or disparities within the population
- The overall level of health system responsiveness (satisfaction)
- How well people of varying income levels find they are served by the healthcare system
- The distribution of financial burden within the population (World Health Organization n.d.).
Among the 11 developed nations in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) the U.S. ranks lowest in life-expectancy and highest in suicide rates (Tikkanen & Abrams, 2020). Tikkanen and Abrams (2020) also state that the United States in 2018 spent 17% of gross domestic product (GDP) on healthcare, more than 2 times that of the average OECD country.
Americans on average spend 56% of their income on healthcare compared to the developing nation of Colombia with universal healthcare where the amount your expense is based on your ability to pay (World Health Organization, n.d.). According to the WHO (n.d.) Colombia ranks 22nd, fifteen spots ahead of the U.S. in the healthcare rankings.
