Research Draft

This week we you will develop your research draft paper. You will include the information you presented in your week 1 proposal for the first part of this draft. Be sure to include your thesis statement in your introduction. You will then include the subheadings sections you created in week 4.You will also develop and present your results in the discussion section (download research template). You must meet the following requirements:

ORDER NOW FOR CUSTOMIZED SOLUTION PAPERS

  • Your paper should range from 6-8 pages.
  • The paper should have 6-8 peer-reviewed references.
  • Your paper must combine information from two different disciplines.
  • Your paper should be written in third person and past tense.
  • Your paper must be in APA format.

Criteria for Research Draft:

  • Title – not just a topic name – should capture the research problem and tell the reader what the research investigates
  • Introduction – 1-2 paragraphs – gives your reader adequate background information and includes your main thesis statement
  • Problem Statement – 1 paragraph – describes the overarching problem to include your main (supported) problem statement
  • Purpose Statement – 1 paragraph – describes the intent of the research to include your main purpose statement
  • Research Questions – include your research question(s)
  • Study Significance – 1 paragraph describes the importance of the study to include your main significance statement
  • 3-5 Subheadings – Include topic sentences that describe what is covered under each subheading (the subheadings make up to main research body)
  • Discussion – Present your conclusions and results based on the research you presented in the subheadings. This is where you clearly answer your research question(s)
  • Conclusion – 1 paragraph to summarize the key points to include a rephrasing of your thesis statement
  • References – 6-8 peer-reviewed sources

Note** We are not writing a proposal anymore, we have completed our research. Therefore, this paper should be written in past tense.

Research Interview

Introduction

Kelly Hancock is a recognized nursing practitioner who is the executive Chief Nursing Officer of Cleveland Clinic Health System and Cleveland Clinic Main Campus. She has 20 years of experience and manages a team made of 22,000 nurses. As Chief Nursing Officer, Hancock supervises nursing practices and is in charge of the development and education of nurses in fields such as home care and rehabilitation. Kelly Hancock is qualified to answer my questions because, through her career, she has witnessed the significant changes occur in nursing practices. Among these changes is the introduction of technology in medical settings, especially, in nursing practice at Cleveland Clinic. (Hancock, 2019)

Procedure

To contact Kelly Hancock, I sent her an email stating the purpose of this assignment along with the academic program I am pursuing. In the email, I asked Kelly Hancock for an interview of 15 minutes, specifying the questions to be discussed. These questions were “What are the challenges generally encountered in implementing new technologies in nursing?” and “Can robots be used as a relevant technologies to improve nursing practices?”

Results

According to Hancock, implementing technologies in nursing is first and foremost a tricky endeavour because from one hospital to another, technologies change. Hancock stated technologies intended to improve nursing practices are tremendous but their variety raises up a problem of compatibility. While some medical facilities are reluctant to the use of new technologies, others which have implemented technological changes claim that these technologies do not properly function, and are mostly outdated. In addition, Hancock emphasized the need for appropriate technological platforms as an essential aspect preventing the expansion of technologies in nursing. Most of the current technologies developed for nurses require new and modern equipment while several medical facilities are still equipped with old equipment. According to Hancock, implementing new technologies in nursing require considerable investments aimed at upgrading the existing facilities. Hancock argued that the other challenge encountered in implementing new technologies in nursing regards the intrinsic cost of technology and the efforts required for its future proper use. Technologies aimed at improving nursing practices are generally developed to be integrated into a wider general system. According to Hancock, this integration is essential because in medical facilities, nurses interact with different professional bodies, and the outputs of their interventions are used by others as inputs. Thus, these systems must be compatible with the medical setting and properly mastered by nurses for an effective use. Regarding, effectiveness, Hancock stated that in most cases, nurses need substantial training sessions which are costly and time-consuming.

Hancock stated that in spite of the outstanding advantages and results associated with the use of robots in medical facilities, managers must weigh the impact of this specific technology in their facilities before its implementation. According to Kelly Hancock, robots represent a technological breakthrough aimed at overcoming the limitations of human practices. In most cases, their use implies a significant decrease in human interaction. Kelly Hancock proceeded by stating that, human interaction is at the center of nursing practices and that introducing robots in nursing requires a deep analysis of the social impact within medical facilities. In terms of impact, Kelly Hancock highlighted the role of nurses in the enhancement of patient care. On the other hand, Hancock identified some circumstances in which the use of robots in nursing could be a real advantage. Hancock stated that in some countries, there is a real demand for elderly care where the number of nurses is limited. Hancock gave the example of Japan where nursing shortage triggered the development of “Robear”, the first generation of nursing-care robots. According to Hancock, America is also moving towards the introduction of robots in nursing.

Conclusion

My research paper aims at identifying the benefits of technology with regard to nursing practice, in addition to the reasons why practitioners should continue using this technology. First of all, this interview gave me a brief overview of what it takes to implement new technologies in medical facilities, especially, technologies addressing nursing issues. Hancock’s responses on the challenges faced in implementing technologies represent an excellent background for my research paper. The use of technology in different settings is currently a standard, especially in the medical field. In fact, medical facilities equipped with advanced technologies are deemed efficient in terms of medical care. However, the difficulties encountered in implementing these technologies are generally overlooked. Therefore, it was important to get the opinion of a professional in order to give a practical interest to my research paper. From a practical point of view, the benefits associated with technology must always be compared to its costs and different impacts. Therefore, Hancock’s answers provided me with research leads that I will deeply explore in my research paper in order to point out the most relevant benefits of technology in nursing. As regards the second aim of my research paper which was the reasons why nurse practitioners should continue using technology, the question about robots is of interest because it allows making predictions. If nurse practitioners are supposed to continue using technology, it is, therefore, crucial to identify what this technology will look like in the future along with its main applications. The use of robots in medical settings is foreseen as the future of technology in healthcare. Therefore, knowing the future impact of robots in nursing can help approach the second aim of my research paper.
