Communication is an essential, yet often challenging, part of health care management. Health care administrators, managers, and leaders are responsible for facilitating communication with an array of stakeholders, including patients and families; physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals; board members; and the broader community. Issues such as health literacy, high-stress environments, and vulnerable populations may impact communication, and health care administrators must be able to use a variety of communication skills and channels to express themselves and their organization’s message. Given the diversity among individuals and groups with whom health care administrators must communicate, it is important to select the best communication skills and channels based on the purpose, context, and receiver of the communication.

In this Discussion, you select a case provided in the Learning Resources. You examine some of the business communication challenges presented that illustrate frequently encountered situations in health care organizations. You consider health care administrators’ responsibilities for facilitating communication with diverse groups of internal and external stakeholders. You also consider strategies and selection of appropriate communication channels for specific situations.

BY DAY 3

Post a substantive and cohesive response to the following:

  • Analyze the different communication skills and communication channels used by a health care administrator in the case you selected.
  • Identify strategies for advancing communication used by the health care administrator in the case you selected. Consider how the environment where the case takes place plays a part in the communication strategy.
  • Analyze the implication of diversity on communication in your case. This may include age, gender, culture, level of health literacy, and/or other factors.

Note: Use and cite sources to support your posting and responses.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings.

BY DAY 5

Respond to at least two of your colleagues’ postings, adding insights related to the identified issue. Share insights related to your personality, culture, health literacy proficiency, and/or experiences. Explain how these may influence your approach to handling the issue(s) identified in your selected article.

Continue this Discussion until Day 7 by adding insights related to the influence of diversity on communication in health care.

Assignment: Professional Development Plan

If you don’t know where you are going, you might wind up someplace else.
—Yogi Berra

The issues and challenges you have examined in this course provide opportunities for you to be reflective, innovative, and strategic and for you to position yourself as a leader in the health care field. As the health care industry continues to evolve, you will need to grow and transform as well. Your ongoing professional development requires deliberate attention and planning.

To prepare for this Assignment, think about various types of health care settings where administrators may work and the challenges you have examined in this course. For instance, these challenges may relate to trends in health care delivery, health care administration competencies, or time constraints that can interfere with your professional development. Which challenges are most salient for a health care administration position you are likely to fulfill? Select two or three challenges on which to focus for this Assignment, and consider what you can do to prepare for and/or to address those challenges. How can you leverage your strengths or other resources? Also think about how addressing your selected challenges will enable you to contribute to positive social change.

Review the results of your HumanMetrics assessment and the ACHE Competency Assessment (which you completed in Week 3) and think about how personality; culture; language proficiency; and your personal, academic, and professional experiences likely influence your communication tendencies and preferences. What are areas in which you can further develop? How can your communication skills be enhanced or leveraged? In addition, consider your priorities for work-life balance.

Develop at least three goals related to your education and/or career that you will commit to achieving within the next 3 years. Ensure that your goals are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely (SMART), as described in the “SMART Goals” (Walden University Academic Skills Center, n.d.) resource.

Consider strategies for achieving each goal. What concrete actions will help you move toward your desired outcomes, and how do they fit in your timeline? For example, you might consider the following questions:

  • Which professional organizations will you join? What do you expect to contribute to each organization, and what do you hope to gain?
  • Which work experiences (in your current workplace or a future place of employment) could you seek out to enhance your opportunities in the field?
  • How will you learn about new developments in your field?

The Assignment

Create a 2- to 3-page personal development plan document that addresses the items contained within the template that is provided within the Learning Resources for this week.

  • Describe your personal, professional and academic priorities.
  • Identify your overall ACHE competency rating.
  • Describe two or three challenges you will need to address to be successful as a health care administrator and/or to promote positive social change.
  • Describe at least three SMART goals related to your education and/or career that you will commit to achieving within the next 3 years.
  • Describe several concrete actions which include benchmarks or measure and timelines that you can take to facilitate achievement of each goal you have identified.
  • Identify your personal and professional strengths and other resources. Describe ways you can leverage resources, your strengths, communication skills, and leadership style.

Your Assignment must be written in standard edited English. Be sure to utilize the provided style guides in writing your personal development plan. Your plan is a dynamic document that you can refer back to throughout your career and update as your goals change and you achieve milestones.
