Week 7

Posted on: Tuesday, April 13, 2021 11:24:54 AM EDT

Dear Students,

I know this last week was stressful with the midterm. The midterm is currently being analyzed. If there any changes, I will be sure to let you all know.

This week you all are learning about mechanical ventilation. This topic can be difficult for those who have not worked in critical care and haven’t been exposed to ventilators. Please make sure you utilize all your resources to help you better understand the topic. I have a lot of experience managing ventilators so if you are struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me for help.

You have two knowledge checks this week that are due April 19 @ 0159 est. Please make sure you take the time to complete these to the best of your ability. Even though they are only 10 points a piece, they collectively contribute to 15% of your grade.

Below are links to previous grand rounds that covered immunizations and stroke.

Immunizations 3/31/21
Stroke  4/7/21

I hope you all have a great week. Please email me if you are having any issues or have questions or concerns.

Best,

Week 7: Mechanical Ventilation

Often referred to as the “lungs of the Earth,” trees serve a vital role in environmental health. When they are no longer able to fulfill this role, forest services and other groups will do their best to treat them, and they will routinely plant new trees to maintain that environmental health.

When patients experience issues of respiratory distress and similar problems, urgent care is often needed to restore health. Often, this requires the use of mechanical ventilation. Patients are often ventilated quickly upon diagnosis of acute respiratory failure or compromised lung function. The immediate goal is to continue the vital respiratory functions of oxygen intake and carbon dioxide removal from the blood.

This week, you explore concepts related to mechanical ventilation. You examine the purpose and function of tools utilized, and you explore strategies for restoring respiratory function and overall health.

Learning Objective

Students will:

  • Identify concepts related to mechanical ventilation
