Best,

Week 5: Venous Thromboembolism (VTE), Clotting Disorders

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) and other clotting disorders can present significant health risks, including disability and death. These types of disorders afflict large numbers of people across all walks of life.

Given this, prevention is a popular topic among healthcare professionals. Diagnosis is aided by the use of blood tests, ultrasounds, and CAT scans. Treatment is typically a matter of urgency and can require anticoagulants, mechanical devices, or therapy. But “prevention” is the word that can lead to life-saving practices.

This week, you will review pathologic conditions that contribute to clotting disorders, including ITP, TTP, DIC, and thrombocytopenia. You will review approaches for the assessment, diagnosis, management, and prevention of VTE, and you will apply current clinical practice guidelines in the development of treatment plans for affected patients.

Learning Objective

Students will:

  • Identify concepts related to VTE and clotting disorders
