You will prepare a Teaching Plan for a patient population of interest, utilizing the guidelines presented below. You will not actually implement the Teaching Plan as part of this class, but it is anticipated that this plan could be used in a patient teaching setting.

Teaching Plan
Develop a teaching plan for your topic. This includes the following:
- Researching your topic
- Patient learning objectives
- Outline for the class
- Resources (includes any articles used for the Teaching Plan)
- Identification of appropriate teaching strategies
- Instructional materials (handouts, equipment, powerpoint video, etc.)
- Plan for evaluation (i.e., how you will know learning has occurred)
Submit the Teaching Plan via the Assignments link. The Teaching Plan should follow the format on page 452 in Bastable (2014). Teaching Plan (TP) Format
| Teaching Need:
Patients participating are males of various ethnicities, cultures, cognition, and education levels, and range from ages 18 and older. It is important for patients to be able to identify their medications to avoid medication errors. Knowing their medication can promote medication compliance. Teaching plan will be given in both English and Spanish if necessary. Upon completion of teaching plan, patients will obtain the information needed for medication safety.

Educate patients on importance of knowing their medication by name, description, dosage, and frequency. Patients should feel comfortable reporting any side effects. Medication knowledge can help patients maintain medication compliance during stay at Mesilla Valley Psychiatric Center and at home.

The goal of this teaching session is for patients to understand importance of knowing their medication to avoid medication errors. Patients should be able to recognize side effects.

As patients are oriented times three the teaching will be done in a group session, with a calm and quiet environment. Teaching will be done by verbal instruction in patients preferred languages. Teaching plan will consist of patient’s interactions to determine what information regarding medication safety patients are already aware of. |
